Hydrogels based on spruce xylan loaded with silver nanoparticles

The development of hydrogels with antibacterial properties from arabinoglucuronoxylans (AGX) by incorporating silver nanoparticles is reported. Stable spherical silver nanoparticles (10 to 30 nm diameter) were achieved through the in situ reduction of AgNO3 at 5 mM, 10 mM and 20 mM. Analysis and characterization of the obtained hydrogels and silver nanoparticles were performed through FTIR spectroscopy, NMR, DLS, UV-Vis spectroscopy and viscoelasticity. SEM and TEM were used to depict nanoparticle sizes and morphology. Antimicrobial activity of the hydrogels was examined by inoculation of E. coli and S. aureus.
